Located in the Santa Barbara, California suburb of Montecito, Mesa Tree Company has been serving the greater Santa Barbara area for over 20 years. We are a full service company; our services include tree maintenance, tree removal, tree installation, and relocation.

We also have an inventory of trees for sale. Our personnel are fully trained and equipped to handle almost any job. Active owner, Douglas Coale, is a certified arborist and oversees day to day operations.

About Us

Mesa Tree Company was started in 1984 as a part time means to a college education. Having just moved to Santa Barbara from the LA area, founder Douglas Coale began working part time for area tree companies as a “climber”. After two years of college and faced with the daunting task of choosing a college major, Doug decided to take a break and pursue his passion: trees and the outdoors. Mesa Tree Company was founded!

As the business grew, Doug thought more seriously about a career in the tree care industry. In 1993, he enrolled in an arborist certification program through the International Society of Arboriculture and obtained his Arborist Certification. Doug obtained his California State Contractor's license the following year.

In 1997, apprentice climber Vincente “Juan” Medel joined the crew and was soon foreman of the tree maintenance division. This allowed Doug to spend more time on the ground, meeting with clients, managing the business, and developing Mesa Tree Company into a full service tree company with services including tree sales, tree moving, and installation.

Over the years, newer and more specialized equipment has been purchased to meet demand of an increasing workload.

Currently, the company maintains an inventory of over an acre of boxed specimen trees, including rare palm species, many grown from seeds.

In spite of a large increase in business and the on-going tree nursery commitments, Doug still answers the phone, does all the estimating, and makes time to meet personally with clients to assess their tree issues.

More than twenty years later Doug is still trying to decide on a college major and still enjoying the outdoors. His passions include, freediving/spearfishing, backpacking, and as an accomplished welder/fabricator, building custom motorcycles, fabricating, modifying and maintaining tree equipment.
