As a tree maintenance provider, we are often faced with the task of removing trees. There are many situations that may lead to the decision to remove a tree. These may include diseased or dead trees as well as trees determined to be structurally unsound, or destructive to surrounding structure or landscape. Often trees have grown to the point that trimming alone does not result in a pleasing look. Whatever the reason, our experienced personnel can assist with tree assessment and provide information as well as possible alternatives to removal so that you can feel comfortable with your decision to remove a tree.
When removing trees in an urban environment, we are often confronted with working in confined areas, over structures, or a delicate landscape. Our personnel are equipped and experienced in the use of rigging involving ropes and hardware for safe tree removal, often utilizing aerial equipment such as cranes and man lifts where access allows.
Following is a sequence of photos documenting the 2004 removal of an old Oak tree at the Santa Barbara museum of Natural History. The tree was found to have considerable amount of decay around the base and posed a threat to the blue whale exhibit as well as museum visitors. After the decision to remove the tree was reached, Mesa Tree Company was called in. Proximity of the tree to the whale exhibit required that a crane be utilized to safely lower cut portions of the tree to a staging area where they could processed and disposed of safely. The entire job was completed in less than three hours with very little disruption to museum operation and the whale, though a little nervous, made it through without a scratch.
People often develop a sentimental attachment to trees on their property, If and when the time comes to remove a favorite landscape tree Mesa Tree Co. can offer a few options for utilizing the resulting material. One option is to mill the wood into lumber. The lumber may be used to build furniture, trellises, garden arbors, etc.
Value of the wood depends on the variety and the yield. Generally, trees harvested from our urban forest do not yield enough lumber to interest commercial buyers but with some creativity, the possibilities are endless. One client had the remaining trunk of a favorite sycamore milled into planks which were utilized to panel a remodeled kitchen.

View Clearing
A century ago, the Santa Barbara landscape was made up mostly of rolling hills covered with grass and sage, very similar to the Gaviota coast North of town today. Concentrations of trees existed primarily in the shady arroyos and steep North facing slopes of the foothills where creeks and seeps provided water. The steep terrain also provided only limited access to the fuel gatherer’s axe.
As the community developed, so did the desire for landscape trees. With irrigation and a favorable climate, trees from around the world were introduced creating the landscape that we are familiar with today.
While trees provide ambiance and privacy, they can also encroach on ocean and mountain views that Santa Barbara is famous for. “View clearing” is the practice of trimming trees to enhance views taking care to maintain privacy and preserve the health of trees involved. Often, offending trees may be located on neighboring properties requiring that a relationship be developed and maintained with neighbors to allow regular access and pruning of their trees.
Personnel at Mesa Tree Company have considerable experience in dealing with issues involving neighboring trees, and will offer to consult with all parties involved to assure realistic expectations so as to avoid “surprises”.

Stump Grinding
Stump grinding is the most economical and least invasive way to remove stumps. A stump grinder is a machine that literally grinds the stump into fine chips. Stump grinding avoids the expense and ramifications of excavating a stump and is a far more economical alternative. Rather than the expense of stump disposal, the chips may be used to backfill hole or as landscape mulch.
Mesa Tree Company maintains several stump grinders in its equipment inventory, from a small self propelled model for difficult access areas to a large 95 horsepower machine capable of grinding stumps eight feet in diameter. Mesa staff is experienced in their operation and are skilled in operating in confined spaces.

Tree Moving and Installation
Did you know that Mesa Tree Company also relocates and installs large trees?
We have crews experienced in excavating, boxing, and relocating field-grown trees as well as site preparation and the installation of large nursery-grown trees.
We are often called in on new construction sites to relocate existing trees. A good portion of our work includes boxing and moving mature Coast Live Oak trees, as county regulations prohibit their destruction in association with new construction. Our crews are experienced at hand digging and we also utilize heavy equipment where access allows. We can move trees locally with our own equipment, or contract with local haulers for long haul tree transport.
Mesa Tree Company can also provide offsite storage and maintenance for large trees through the duration of a construction project.
